Nobody puts effort into free stuff these days, sadly, unless the original game no longer functioned...and even then, thats probably a pipe dream.
It pains me to say it, but most developers only care about making a profit...especially larger companies. When your paying employees it complicates things, same as it does if you end up at odds working with someone else--this was actually the first thing me and ivo covered before even discussing the game plans, our expectations and our morale grounds about subscription based income and half finished VNs etc. etc.
If we didn't have the same distaste for people basically getting shafted after supporting developers we probably wouldn't be working together. One of the biggest concerns we shared was something bringing a wedge between us that caused the game to become a dispute or a difference in values making things a mess...obviously we realized we felt the same about those situations and had no reason to worry.
But the reason I have a disgust for most developers isn't really a lack of skill, its a lack of skill born from a lack of love for programming itself, most book or school taught devs are just in the field to make a buck and most projects are based on that simple concept.
These days its just getting sad, people re-releasing DOS games on Steam with emulators and zero fixes, no support, etc.
To hope a company will release free anything is pretty wishful thinking.
One of the hardest things for me personally...is trying to give our subscribers benefits that don't ruin the actual game for free users...like achievements, something that would be included if you paid for the game on steam but otherwise unnecessary to enjoy the game..
.but we're a unique pair in the gaming world
