There is a simple solution to prevent this past situation, that being not announcing the games in advance and not posting in this thread. Creating a new one, cannot be anticipated and would prevent any ability to argue about being first... and of course, there is always raffles, which has no room for debate.

Posting in a different (random) thread might exclude a lot of the regulars. I imagine most of the Lair denizens only check this thread and maybe a few others. How many are even aware that RETRO has a GIVEAWAYS ARENA thread?

Not announcing the games in advance would mitigate the problem of people trying to snipe the best games and bickering about who was first but might lead to other issues. For example, people might make impulsive choices just to get in line early and later try to modify their choices for any number of reasons. It could cause more chaos and the pressure to be early will still exist.

I think a raffle is the best format both for the giveaway creator and for the participants. It gets rid of the "early bird" factor and leaves no room for debate. How would you raffle off so many games? Here's one idea:

1. Creator posts a list of the available games.
2. Users have 24 hours to submit a ranked list of their top 10 choices (or up to 10).
3. Once the submission period is closed, the creator distributes the games based on this procedure.
  • Look at all the games ranked #1. If a game is only in one person's #1 slot, they get it. If not, do a mini raffle between the tied users.
  • Delete the list of anyone who won a game.
  • Repeat the above steps for ranks #2 through #10
4. Optionally, compensate those who didn't win anything. Maybe they get a pick from a special pool of extra games or, if you want to make things more complicated, they could receive "tickets" that increase their odds of winning future raffles.

Someone with scripting experience could easily automate step 3.

Just my 2 cents. I'd hate to see these giveaways die just because of the inappropriate behavior of a few.

I was aware, but was not invited, so I never said more than "Retro, sent you a gift"...and left lol.

Which is how I found it, looking for him :ROFLMAO:

On top of that I noticed some of the people there may have been there to avoid being here, so it felt awkward to just walk on in uninvited 🤷‍♂️

I could make a program to do this, scripting is not my strong point...and unfortunately my limited situation is making it extremely hard to focus on learning atm.

This is how I get runners up in my program, by eliminated previous winners.

I have to add that doing it that way, unless people were to send PMs (and even then) would be extremely hectic to follow unless a particular thread was used ONLY for entries, any chatter beyond that would ban them from future GAs unless it was GA related.

Also, this allows for alts and multiple accounts to join ahead of time where its much harder during a free for all.

There really is NO way to avoid ppl being ppl unless you point blank restrict it to those who share...and even then, anyone can toss fueda keys into it for paid key access.

Its an all around lose lose...or you simply accept that its going to happen.

Its not my GA, I just support the idea...we can throw ideas around all day but in the end its entirely up to him. either way I noticed it became way more competitive once we had a preview before hand.

Maybe contributors should be able to request first and/or trade between themselves and the rest can get surprised--at the least it encourages ppl to donate...but it also defeats his original concept of simply sharing with everyone.

So really idk.

The raffle sounds great, but thats alot of work for him.

I think that thread is for giveaway creators, so you more than qualify to walk in.

There would be no need for people to posts their lists publicly. They could all be sent via PMs, ideally with the same subject line to make them easy to identify. It would be a lot less confusing and spammy than the current flood of requests, sometimes multiple from the same users.

Also, this allows for alts and multiple accounts to join ahead of time where its much harder during a free for all.
Alts are, and will always be, a problem. I don't see how it's that much harder for them in a free for all. It's the same with the normal raffles that rely on emoji reactions. RETRO, or anyone else using a raffle system, can always decide to exclude entrants.

Its not my GA, I just support the idea...we can throw ideas around all day but in the end its entirely up to him. either way I noticed it became way more competitive once we had a preview before hand.
Not my GA either. I'm just throwing around ideas in case it helps. This is how I would do it if I was in RETRO's position, for fairness reasons and just to stay sane.

Edit: And yes, it did seem to become much more competitive once previews became available. It could also be the improved quality of the offerings. I shudder to think what would happen if one of the choices was a $5+ game.

The raffle sounds great, but thats alot of work for him.
If the step where the winners are assigned can be automated, it would be a lot less work for him. All he would have to do is feed the lists from all the users to the script and it would spit out the winners. Ideally, all the lists would be in his mailbox, so no need for him to even look at the posts here. It would be a cleaner solution for him and for us.

Unless they're using automated user switching or risking being on multiple gala accounts from the same stationary IP (even a VPN leads to an ISP), it takes them time at the least or multiple PCs setup...which they wouldn't be doing all day on gala (I would hope lol) - life...less.

No argument here, I started doing an alt check on mine and just excluded known alts in the end. way to much hassle.
I think that thread is for giveaway creators, so you more than qualify to walk in.
Like I said, I went there to gift RETRO himself, and since no response came beyond a reaction from him...it didn't feel right to invite myself.

i'm not someone who thinks its my god given right to be included or made an exception because I threw a few keys to people...regardless of what type of keys or what the cost.

Neither are you...so you can understand, but I appreciate the kind words regardless.

Again I agree.

Believe me when I say its a bad idea to even invent a script (too late I'm sure) for anything based on this sites system due to the fact of zero moderation.

Regardless, you still need to do all the sorting and such because you know that people can't format properly even for a bot and it need to be designed on the fly.

From a programmers perspective and a constant user here...that sounds like a serious pain in the arse.

Sorting would need to be done manually because if there is one thing I've learned as a programmer is that you can never expect users to do things right, even if you paste a sticker on their forehead lmao...and it would crash.

I always make my programs under the general idea of thinking of a toddler is walking over a keyboard--and then think worse scenario than that...because it will happen :ROFLMAO:

Now, under the assumption you actually could (miracles do happen), as I said...I'm more of a desktop programmer and I have no keyboard tray atm, so unfortunately I'm not in a position to help anyone (myself included) by making a program right now.

I could make one in a desktop app, possibly even desktop script...but it wouldn't be ideal for this situation--and I know it due to looking into ideas for myself lately in this general direction.

I've actually been needing to learn to make some scripts for my own problems and just can't because typing is near impossible.

Maybe someone else could help here 🤷‍♂️
