After a couple months of busy life to close out 2022, I made a concerted effort to make more time for me to play more games this year, which is going pretty well, but the list is a bit longer compared to previous months. Here are the games I played and beat completely in January!

Evan's Remains - A gift from the Mad Boss @henry-hunry - A side-scrolling adventure game in which you solve mysterious monolith puzzles on an abandoned island. The cast of characters, Vanille, Nikola, and Clover Emor are trying to find Evan, a missing boy genius who sent a letter in a bottle from the island. The pixel graphics are top-notch and has little details like flowers blooming in the grass as you finish levels. The floaty physics feel a bit odd at first but works with the puzzles. Overall, one of the most polished indie games I've played! The writing is superb and doesn't feel stiff, taking you on an emotional journey through the characters. It presents you with the dilemmas of what, ethically, would you do to make someone happy, what does it mean to have everything, and at what point is a lie a lie? Play through the credits!

Hexologic - Another gift from @henry-hunry - A colorful puzzle game that's a little bit of Minesweeper and a little bit of Sudoku. Each level introduces a new mechanic like hexes with predetermined amounts, hexes that populate multiple others at once, and hard levels without certain elements that help you track possible solutions. This is a laudable port of a mobile game. The appearance is crisp, the background music is good, and the difficulty curve will certainly test your math skills but is respectable. If you like number-based puzzles, check this out!

LEGO Builder's Journey - Was free on Epic - A stunning puzzle game where you traverse detailed mini environments made of LEGOs. The brick animations are beautiful, the colors are vibrant, and the story is adorable without words or text! A boy and his dad want to hang out and play with LEGOs all day (relatable!), but the dad has to go to work (Also relatable...), so they kid goes on an adventure to reach his dad. This game is extremely well made. Intuitive controls make sense and allow for freedom of creativity in finding the solutions. How things work might not make sense, but they don't need to, because the magic of LEGO is that someone's helicopter may look totally different than yours but linked together with the common thread of imagination. My only remaining thought was - if the characters are made of LEGO pieces and they are living in a world made of more pieces, are they playing with and living in a world made of their own flesh?

PixelJunk Shooter - A gift from @forsaken - In the distant future, humanity expands father into space for resources. You respond to an S.O.S call from a research planet, Apoxus Prime, and embark on a quest to pick up survivors. In this 2-D twin-stick shooter you pilot your spaceship deeper into the core of the planet as you destroy enemies, neutralize the environment, and find hidden caverns. Everything about this game is polished and fun! The art is colorful, the levels are numerous, the controls are simple and tight, and there's a nice bit of comedy in the writing. I cannot recommend this enough!

Quell Memento - Another gift from @forsaken - A puzzle game where you navigate a droplet around a level collecting jewels in a certain number of moves. The second Quell game remains a phenomenal play, and it adds many new exciting mechanics that build upon the first game - Timekeeper hidden levels, gold pearls, light beams, companion drops, etc. Its attempt to add a story that falls flat, however. As you progress you dust off an old veteran's memories and he spouts off vague "deep" statements that could have just been taken from depressing fortune cookies. It's an odd solemn vibe for such a fun puzzle game.

Spirit of the North - Was free on Epic - An adventure game where you are a fox imbued with the power of a spirit fox after a calamity strikes your world, and you must defeat the evil aura and black goo emanating from atop a mountain. The best part of this game is your fox character - its barks (I thought foxes yipped?), how it shakes its fur out of water, and how it does a goofy slide on ice! The worst part is everything else... The environments are empty, and the hidden sages and runes you find are not able to fill that void. The story showed flashes of being emotional but is minimal and doesn't carry the game's tedious journey. I love foxes so I wanted to love this, but it was just so bland and boring . It does have the best credits scene I've ever played, though.

The Franz Kafka Video Game - A gift from @purpleamuletfiction - A point and click puzzle game in which you play as Franz Kafka - renowned psychotherapist who treats phobias and depression. A bounty of absurdity such as astronauts, flying boats, shadow puppets and duck people all make cameos in an adventure to the US initiated by a mysterious letter Franz receives. What appears to be a journey into a patient's psyche via hypnosis turns out to be much more. The game takes your brain on a trip, but don't ask me what exactly happened or what it all meant because I have the deduction skills of moldy cheese.

The Uncertain: Last Quiet Day - Bought - A good point-and-click adventure game set in a world where humankind wiped themselves out (Or did they? ) and the robots left behind had to rebuild society. Yet, the further along they got, the more they began to act like/resemble humans. You play as a RT-217P, an engineering robot whose skills come in handy as he's swept up in the politics and rebellion of the world. The story is gripping, the graphics are striking, and it has some interesting manipulation controls. My one gripe is that the narration bordered on overkill and was rudimentary. It had me rolling my eyes at times thinking "No shit, Sherlock, did you have to point out the obvious?" It ends in a cliffhanger for the sequel, FYI.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - Was free on Epic - A walking simulator where you play as a detective, Paul Prospero , who is tasked with finding Ethan Carter, discovering what exactly happened in this small town, and why his family abused him. A sickness? An evil presence? A lovecraftian religion? With each environmental clue you find, the various scenes are pieced together using his 'ability'. This is an extremely well-crafted game, with beautiful visuals that gave me macabre oil painting vibes. It's not a horror game, but it is unsettling.

For me, Evan's Remains fell a bit flat. It was a lot more heavy on the story and dialogue than I was expecting going in. I acknowledge that it's a superbly told story with a fun cast of characters, but I was hoping for a bit more substance/challenge from the puzzles.

Shame that Spirit of the North was so bland. It was on my short list of games to try next.
