Halloween Reviews - Choice of Games' Vampire the Masquerade
You know how when we talk about the Fallout franchise, we try not to mention 76? Or when we're talking about Christopher Reeve's Superman movies, we don't talk about Superman IV? Yeah, that's how I feel about this one.
In this elegy of blood, everyone in Athens owes your boss a favor, making you untouchable! Who will you use, who will you help, and who will you prey on?

So, what went wrong? I saw mixed reviews for this game before buying it but didn't want to read detailed reviews, avoiding spoilers. I thought it was again some "woke vs anti-woke" arguing or something like that.
It wasn't.
We're in Athens, Greece this time. It was great to see completely new settings. Our hero is Caitiff (clanless) who is "adopted" and working for a powerful Tremere member, Markos, and lives with him and his childe, Persa. So, you're sort of pusher, delivering and selling blood bags by Markos' orders and... You'll soon start to see problems. Lots of problems!
The first thing you'll notice is that your hunger won't go down despite the fact you just drank some blood. Sometimes it will and sometimes won't. And any VtM player will tell you that taking care of your Hunger is the most important thing. But you know what? It doesn't matter. Nothing matters. All your choices are meaningless. I guess the last 3 or 4 choices in the game at least are taken into account. You can see throughout the game that it's broken but you'll probably like the story - up to that one important showdown. After that, you'll feel like someone lost at least 5 chapters because you're thrown practically at the story's end.
Out for Blood had some seriously broken choices but those were fixed. This one had the last patch in April and it's still an incoherent mess. I'll give you my playthrough in short:
- met that one vamp while taking care of the Masquerade breach;: met priest there; exchanged maybe 5 sentences with both combined
- met Thinblood in a hospital that I met at that previous location; she introduced me to some blood researchers; exchanged 3 words with him
- big Camarilla meeting - met the Prince, Seneschal and Scythian (Sheriff) - exchanged 3 sentences with all of them combined
- after all hell broke loose, went back to my mortal partner and told her everything
-met that priest again and he asked me if I would help him bring down the whole vamp society with the help from his friend police inspector, I accepted - never met that priest again or his police friend
-I was kidnapped and asked to contact that first mentioned vamp and kill him because he's a member of Anarchs (Anarchs are the first time mentioned at that point!) and he'll believe me because we're friends?! Did I mention I only exchanged a few words with him ONCE?!
-if I don't accept, they'll kill that blood researcher. Apparently, that person is very important to me. I mean, I spent whole 10 minutes of my unlife in the same room with him. I guess that's enough?!
-decided not to bother with those clearly drugged vamps because they're talking nonsense, right? And then Scythian approached me - because we're such good buddies (I guess we spent over 30 minutes in the same room!) and I'm supposed to fulfil some prophecy that will kill the Prince and so on...
-we entered the court, and the Prince decided that it was OK he should be killed because of prophecy, right? I mean, the story literally says that he didn't have the will to fight us. Wtf?!
-Scythian proclaims himself a new Prince, those drugged vamps are not happy, nobody cares about that first vamp anymore and the new Prince asks me to save some chick vamp that I never met (I mean, it's the trademark of this game at that point) that wants to meet her final death by taking a tanning at the dawn with all TV networks broadcasting the event live. I only heard of that chick from her Sire at the beginning of the game and, apparently, she disappeared. Why, when and how she reappeared or what she have to do with ANYTHING is beyond human logic. Not to mention that's the biggest Masquerade breach in the history of VtM.
-I saw my mortal partner (she's a TV reporter) among all those TV networks broadcasting live, I get to that vamp chick and said like "Hey, bitch, don't do that". And she was like "OK, I won't".
-And that's the end. The prince gave me a title or something. The game proclaimed Markos is now my enemy or whatever for whatever reason, that first vamp is in Belgrade among Anarchs (I couldn't possibly live without learning that - thanks, game!), the game completely ignores my rekindled romance with my mortal partner or the fact I told her everything and I'm finally happy because it's the end!
And then, this garbage gets Nebula's finalist reward for the best story?! That's the insult worth reducing the final score for a point or two more!
I can only presume that whoever gave the award was either playing the only working route (envisioned by the game author), they were bribed, or their family were kidnapped with a promise they'll be released if they do "the right thing".
Final verdict:
4/10
Pros:
+story is set in Greece, fresh location and lots of possibilities...
Cons:
-...that were ruined by everything
-short story - in fact, I'm not sure if that's good or bad when we take all into account
-meaningless choices; mixed story paths and broken mechanics
-can't
play as Tremere stay sane after playing this
