While they do look fun, the Hiragana and Katakana wouldn't be much of a challenge for me, it would be good practice though, because sometimes it takes me a little bit to remember how to draw one. To be more specific, some of them look alike:

はHA can become ばBA and ぱPA (BA looks like it has a little quotation mark next to it, PA looks like a little circle is next to it). You have to enlarge those with a large font to really see the difference clearly, and those same marks apply to other characters like せSEぜZEさSAざZA
I've been practicing those as I read the words in the Kanji book, they spell out the pronunciations, and I study the spelling and remember the differences that way. Honestly, I trace the characters by pointing at the screen and drawing them with my finger as I pronounce it (whispering), it's recommended that you draw it with pen and paper over and over again, but I think it's roughly the same. :sneaky:

I did study Hiragana and Katakana seriously at first to get to a decent level with it, then I started doing what I said above as practice (so that's my advice to you if you're going to try to learn from a video game or whatever, take it serious at first, then game as practice).

The games have random beginner words, so that would be helpful (for me) to brush up on those, the real challenge and learning experience for my level would be Kanji Combat. Kanji is where Japanese starts to get really challenging, I'm studying those from a book, not taking it too seriously, but when I get a little more experience with Kanji, I'll start playing the games and jump back into my Genki book (which I abandoned after the Kanji started annoying me). :p

Learning japanese sounds so challenging to me, I would need more free time :LOL: and I'm not too much willing to study on books haha.
Anyway writing is best way to memorize many informations for me.
I remember on nintendo ds there were some homebrew and games to learn japanese, you can use the pen stylus to write japanese ideograms.

Get away with it here too...sometimes I get a gift when it happens, others I don't...same with the bundle situation. Its always a toss up what i'll see when I go to one lol.

When you see the above image, click on "Fly away" and that will take you into the Bonus Spore game which can only be played once, if you refresh you will lose it, so don't refresh. Spore game is still random🔢 and even if you get above 5000 pts you will only get 10 ARP sometimes :(, So good luck to all.(y)

I personally started by watching a video on Youtube over the course of a few days, I just paused it and wrote down each character and tried to remember the pronunciation (you can always rewatch portions later, just write down the timestamp where you left off and resume the next day). I put the video in a spoiler, Kana is what they call Katakana and Hiragana (combined) so under the video (on Youtube) it says "Learn all Kana". Of course you can just play the first 2 Video Games and watch the Youtube stuff later, repetition will only help you, but you're a programmer, so you already know that. :LOL:

I realize you probably just want to jump into the game though, can't blame you. The main difference there is that Katakana is used for loan words, so you'll encounter English words (foreign names too BTW) with Japanese pronunciation, McDonalds is マクドナルド (MAKUDONARUDO) but Japanese gets some of it's loan words from Chinese as well, so if the game splits them 50/50, you'll be familiar with 50% of the words already. So let's call Katakana "Easy Difficulty" and Hiragana "Medium Difficulty" (at least for someone who just jumps into the games) because you won't be familiar with any Hiragana words unless you've already learned a few from Anime, but I'm sure the game will teach you Kawaii かわいい which everybody knows means "Cute". So yeah, start with Katakana for that reason, jump into Hiragana later, then obviously Kanji last. :D (y)

The problem I see with the games in his video is that all of the options in the video game are in Japanese, and it looks like it has a lot of those menu options (menus that lead to more menus), he said those games helped him in college while he was learning Japanese, so he already knew enough to navigate the menu options. If those games came with booklets that taught you (in English) what every option did (and the meaning of every option) they would be perfect for a beginner, without such booklets they would be too annoying to play while trying to learn.

I know it sounds like I'm complaining, but I'm just pointing out the problems you would encounter if you payed for all of that stuff. The games look neat though, nice find. (y)

I draw a Kanji, I click "Identify", I pick from a list of Kanjis that are similar to what I drew (which one I meant), and bingo this website does the same thing as his video game.

This is what I drew using my mouse (I know it looks like 💩) maybe the website would work on a phone using your fingertip. :LOL:

It should be hard yes to navigate through the options. I used to play taiko no tatsujin on nintendo ds, it is a rhythm game all in japanese, but after a while I memorized menu options and I understood them without knowing what it was written lol.

Nice website! I just tried to write random things to try if I guess any random kanji. It suggested me kanji that were similar to my drawing. I draw a cross it came out it means 10 lol very funny :LOL:
