Steam Support :: Windows 7 and Windows 8 Support (steampowered.com)

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, existing Steam Client installations on these operating systems will no longer receive updates of any kind including security updates.
I'm sure half the reason for this is that most newer games are all changing requirements as well. Its been planned for quite some time, at least for Windows 7, I was unaware it would be on 8/8.1 as well...which makes my statement more likely to be right.

I know there are workarounds and such (also agree its BS ftr), but on the developer end so much as implementing new sound features added to Windows 10 as well as all the graphics enhancements and still making them work for Windows 7 is a serious chore.

My theory on it from a dev aspect personally is if it works, don't fix it...especially if it works for older operating systems, if the games is old enough to have been coded for Windows 7 then most sales will likely come from that OS now anyways or there won't be enough to justify overhauling it to add newer features and screwing over people who bought it for Windows 7.

But thats my view, people are idiots and will try to scrape every dollar out of a few more sales rather than be loyal to their customers unfortunately.

I was one of the die hard Windows 7 users, even as a dev...but eventually when trying to reinstall onto bigger drives I had to use GPT and I couldn't copy my file properly anyways so rather than deal with fighting a dying OS I just upgraded my gaming drives to Win 10.

My programming drive however hasn't used an internet connection in ages and remains Windows 7 (even with my login screen at 1080p on 4K ) and I refuse to upgrade it so I can continue to make programs that work for Windows 7 as well as the new versions.

Once I can afford to upgrade my motherboard I intend to keep the old one and the programming drive in a second rig and start another programming drive for my main rig since I won't be able to use Windows 7 on a newer chipset--the main reason I never upgraded it before.
I guess they will justify these changes for the sake of the security.

It looks like this is their reason for doing it.

"According to the support notice, many of Steam's features rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome. Google already ended support for Chrome on Windows 7 and 8 earlier this year --- as of Chrome 110, you now need Windows 10 or higher to use Google's browser. Also, Windows 7 and 8 are both now fully unsupported by Microsoft, so it's not surprising to see more apps and services move on."

No.
They want total control over users and more money. That's why they promote the latest versions of Windows.
Everything works fine on older OSes. People are forced to switch to new operating systems by stopping the release of hardware drivers and software updates. It's all about the money!

If they really wanted they could still support older OS.
It's consumerism and control as immerbeaner said. Same with mobiles after few year you need to buy a new one or you can't use some apps or if it is very old you can't even use the store.

On Microsofts End...not Steams.

But then this begs the huge question, since every update since Windows 7 has been entirely free...where are they making money? :ROFLMAO:

The control aspect is a fact and every new version of Windows gets more disgusting...they're just digging their own grave really heh.

This was an uneducated answer entirely...not surprising since you've never seen the Android SDK, every time a new phone adds new hardware the new API is required to use that hardware, also they kill GSM and Wi-Fi network channels switched by the PHONE companies...once those no longer work your really out of luck.

Saying its not all about money is foolish, but its a bunch of companies all fighting for control and the consumers that suffer.

The android apps I would actually say have good reason as our phones improved drastically over the years...we need code to run all the new hardware and its not in the older versions.

Could it be implemented? Idk in that case, probably, but thats like rewriting a linux kernel to add a new feature...no fun.

Windows could add it all easily, hell the OS is still running off 16 bit code underneath, droid may be a different situation, I'm not skilled enough in the use of the ADK to comment.

Have you ever heard of cartel conspiracies? Software manufacturers force you to buy new hardware. You won't be able to run Win11 on old hardware. Old video cards no longer receive driver updates, but new games REQUIRE them.
Programs such as Adobe Photoshop are abruptly abandoning old operating systems under a far-fetched pretext.
All major players in the market work together. They need to sell a product. They don't care about expediency, pollution or common sense. Money clouded their minds.

Hate to say it, but Microsoft doesn't get this much respect.

I'm not saying your wrong about some of these players, but your conspiracy extends a bit far, a few giants forcing the other companies in line.

At first Intel and Microsoft were at arms against each other and Microsoft had intended to build its own Motherboard because Intel refused to adhere to the requirements...your looking at this like most users I see across reddit and such where I was following the tech news as it happened that you can no longer find without some extensive searching.

There were alot of battles going on when Windows 7 was dropped on the I-7 processors because it supports the requirements but can also run Windows 7 still (my processor being one of them)
Programs such as Adobe Photoshop are abruptly abandoning old operating systems under a far-fetched pretext.
Again your missing the aspect of programming, as new hardware comes out like GPUs being able to process more faster than most actual processors alot of the security algorithms have become too easy to hack.

Should we be given a choice of taking the risk? Certainly. But imagine the layman users who are too incompetent to see or make that choice and just too stubborn to upgrade and learn a new OS, they far outweigh the techie user base and thats what companies are forced to deal with when things go wrong.

Your right...in a sense, but its not as black and white as your making it seem.

The truth is I agree with you, being able to mind my own security and preferring the way things were, but I also see the reasons companies would fall in line when pushed...aside from the fact Microsoft still has enough funds to bury most of them in a heartbeat even just eating the loss while they did it.

You have to take into consideration the users who can't even click and play or who are too old to do all these tasks themselves but still plenty capable of making a huge stink if they're banks get hijacked or something along those lines.

Nothing is as simple as it seems...even though it sucks.

Just wanna holler at henry for dropping Earthlock on me out of the blue.

Looks like a combination of a bunch of old RPG games from the FF7 era (maybe a bit too closely, we shall see)...either way, I appreciate it my friend and I'll give it a run whenever I can stop playing Octopath 2 for ten minutes
