I have ralph browns interrupt list which probably covers controlling them in 16 bit systems, maybe I even have those somewhere (quite likely), but another copy never hurts.

I only wanted it because it would have been ancient...the code these days (like the interrupts on that list) is all hidden behind other functions...never the Raw code from when it directly controlled the device.it's for linux but maybe you can find some useful infos here

Better? Not these days...like I explained above you can't really even touch it anymore.
It is much more interesting though...I always like to learn the very bottom of the basics, if you can understand that part of it then everything above it makes a lot more sense and becomes relatively easy no matter what your forced to use to access it
Its like learning to deal with bits and bytes or even single characters compared to strings...its much easier when you learn the lower level and make your own string than someone who just learns of a string and has no idea its just a class that uses single characters.
If you can build the foundation you understand the entire building structure
