Gifted Games Reviews #4: Carmageddon​

Attention, all competitors! This is your one-minute warning! I repeat: one minute until race commencement. Members of the public: you now have one minute to reach minimum safe distance! OK, ladies and gentlemen, fire'em up! Twenty seconds to go! Those who're about to die: we salute you!

I name "Carmageddon" one of the most honest games there exist. Do you remember that feeling during GTA or Mafia when you get into the first few cars and think:"Wow, what a car, i want no scratches on it! Let's drive according to rules and stop on red light!" You won't get any of those in "Carmageddon"! It's really quite simple: you have limited time – very limited during last maps – and several – 12 to 15 during last maps – laps to go. There's no way you get to the finish line on time even if you want to. Thus, you need more time. Three ways to gather it: green powerups, crashing cars and...killing people. And when you're low on time, your opponents are tough (or just not that close to you), there're no green oil drums in sight, the choice is quite simple. Sorry, peeps!

Let's start with cons this time.

Cons.
1. DosBox. Be ready to get DosBox emulation. I understand studios that use it for old games but it's just a messy program. For example, some in-game options don't work: you can't lower sound volume. That results in your ears getting blasted with loud soundtrack during all races. The only real solution is to delete several lines of files to never hear it again. You can't Alt+Tab. Well, you can. But twice each time. I mean, if you want to Alt+Tab and get back into game you have to: Alt+Tab, go back to the game (you get the black screen), Alt+Tab again, go back to the game again, it works. Emulators may crash (they all do it once in a while). Happened to me once after getting about 10 levels and that was pretty frustrating. Since that i started saving my game after each race.
2. Levelling mechanics. It may become a bit repetitive: if you don't score enough points during the race, you need to grind previous races cause a new race pops up every 3 levels. And some races are not that easy to get those points as they have fewer people. Luckily, the farther you get, the easier it becomes as you'll be able to crash cop cars and that gives you tremendous amount of points.

Pros.
1. Max Pack. With this package you get not one but 4 games: original (both pure and 3dfx versions), splat pack (new races and cars, again pure and 3dfx) and the ability to host or join multiplayer for both of them. I finished the original one, so everything i'm writing is about this one.
2. Censorship. There's none! There were some versions that swapped people with zombies or robots, changed blood to green or removed it completely but luckily here we have none of that. Feel free to get internal organs on your screen!
3. Joy. Wrrrrroooom....wrrrrroooom....woooooosh....Checkpoint!....WAH-WAH-AAAAAaaaaa-splat....Sorry!....BANG!....Son of a....Goddamn mother....wee-oh-wee-oh-wee-oh....Oh, sh*t!....rrrrrr....BOOM! Screech! All your opponents have been wasted! Race completed!
4. Soundtrack. It bangs! If only it could be paused...(see cons #1).

All in all, i really enjoyed replaying it and remembering my youth days. Thank you, RETRO, once again! The game is definitely old but still worthy! Sometimes people need to release pressure and empty their head without learning hundreds of combos like in MK or Tekken. Arrows, space, tab and fix button (backspace, hell yeah!) are all you need!

Took me about 22 hours to finish the campaign and it could be definitely done faster if you understand how to get more points from the beginning. I'd rate it a bit less than 85% on steam, closer to 80% but...nostalgia must be taken into account. They just don't make games like this nowadays!

The Last of Us™ Part II Remastered has a huge story (24hrs game story line time)

I am stıll playıng Indıana Jones The Great Circle. I loved to see old chars from the movie back in the game and watching it like a new movie.
its a fun game to play with and is a gem for me.

You must have 10 games or tasks to be banned. I saw an error before with a game showing that it was removed from my wishlist, but I didn't even touch it. And if I remember correctly if you keep them for 30 days you can remove them without getting any failed tasks

EDIT:

Jumped to four, one of them is some free source code site probably stealing my code :LOL:

Another is an AI art site...which I can't follow back 'yet', AI art has literal hatred tags in this fan base lmao.

No big surprise since its mostly visuals unless you go insane like I did...the base UI is enough to actually make the game run without almost any coding at all.
