The bottom pictures background looks it, so does the MC running in the top picture but that could be the freeze frame of it. Flik looks a bit off but not enough to really gripe.
To me it looks like the environments are "flat" 3d renders with the original pixel characters. Not that clear on the screenshots I posted due to compression.
I definitely see it there now. Like you said screenshots can't really do it justice...but that scene did much better.
