But this is as dangerous as being sent by the owner. There is no warranty of delivery and lefts a lot of room for potential issues.

Lets not forget HB actually had issues with this scenario where it was potentially a risk to your account.

I'm not clear on the details of why...maybe it revealed personal info, maybe HB just didn't like it, but if someone misused the key I'm sure the backlash from HB would have been on the owner.

Yes. I don't know why they choose the email. A simple user profile link should be enough. The link is already public and no personal data is involved.
