Ok, so it seems it could be useful when trading then? To protect the key, if there is doubts about any region restrictions?
I don't understand what you specifically mean but steam says 'Sorry, but this product is not available for purchase in this country. Your product key has not been redeemed.' But the key can be activated. That is, Valve did not make it possible for users to find out the status of the key or see the restrictions.

Understood. But I was just dealing with someone from Germany, and we were in doubt about region restrictions. So we tried and the key didn't work (eventhough I am European too). Since we were so much in doubt, there would have been no reason for me to give a good key, if we could have checked just with a dupe.

Can't you just have him send you another key that he knows for a fact is Region Locked to the Same Region and Used?
Also, not sure if I follow everything, but you said that it has to be a game that you already have in your Steam Library or not?

Also, you could mess with the whole VPN thing and setting your Region but it could get you banned. I don't think they're actively banning people for it, but you could try it on a dummy account where you stand nothing to lose. That is of course if you want to test a game on the dummy account that the dummy account does not already own (Unless you happen to have 2 Region Locked keys to the same game, 1 Used, 1 Unused).

Hope this helps.
Anything beyond this, feel free to Google it or actually test it, and let us know what you find. (y)

That dummy account thing actually gave me a headache, you need to dummy it down :ROFLMAO:

I think you had the right idea of what they want to know, but just to clarify this mess up...

They are trying to see which error Steam will show first

"Your account already owns this product."

Or

"This product cannot be activated in your region."

To what ends, I assume to see if people are lying to them during trades or sales gone wrong...but I'm not totally sure.

No, I sent him a key. And we were in a lot of doubt, A dupe most likely could have answered the question to the benefit of both of us.

No, the key should not be in the library of the person who tried it, then all bets are off I guess...

Aha! My guess is that you already own this product shows first, then the region lock, and then dupe. Am I right?

EDIT: Still seems useful to me anyway :) No need to expose a good key next time.

Something, Something, Something, Dark Side. :ROFLMAO:
If he has 2 Europe-only steam codes for Deponia (because LOL) 1 code is used, 1 code is new. He uses a VPN to tunnel into USA, now he can test. First test the dupe code on the dummy account, find out what message it gives when you do not own the game and use a dupe code. Next try the new unused code, find out what message it gives when you use a brand new code from another Region.

If he wants to further test what message it gives when you do own the game already, then things get complicated.

Much better :ROFLMAO:

I agree with your VPN theory though and again have to add a little note...Steam may ban your actually ISP if they ban you, not the active account.

Of course thats just a guess, its what would happen if you were caught using a torrent for illegal downloads multiple times...and foolish enough to respond to the email about it admitting you were aware of it happening lol.

I got one myself once, but hey...someone must have hacked my router, ya know? :ROFLMAO:
