Well, someone can use this unclaimed key and activate it. But now is it little bit useless because the game is free.

usually a free (on steam) game wont give any cards or count +1.
the key will simply activate normally like any other key and if the game gave card and +1 before it was free, then it will give those after activation.
so no, the key is not completely useless... its worthwile for those that want those benefits
by the way... if someone already got the free version of the game... the key wont upgrade to a bought version; the key wont redeem... as far as i know...
