I got this game through the gameplay giveaway. To find out what it was, I had to try and activate it. As a result, the key may have become a dummy (I do hope it hasn't)..

Sorry, you misunderstand. I already owned the game. I wouldn't have started the giveaway if I had used the key to add a game I didn't own, as I know that uses up the key. I tried to redeem this key and steam gave me the error 'already owned', so the key should still be valid, unless the version I already owned was different than the one of this key, in which case the key may have been used up. I hope this is clearer.
