The thing a lot of people misunderstand about karma is that it's a concept that works over multiple lifetimes. There is no justice in this one.
I prefer the Bible's take on it: Matthew 13:12 "Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them."
The rich get richer. The poor get poorer. Being poor is expensive.
TLDR: "Life is unfair." Malcolm in the Middle OP.
That said, if you want to live in a world where people help each other, even if it isn't directly transactional, I can see how it starts with you. The same with being generally pessimistic and distrustful. You will be less likely to be screwed over, but you'll also be less likely to see the payoff.

I could actually argue this with valid points and examples from my own life...but I would sound batshit. Nobody else would be able to see it the way I did...but I watched as karma beat me into a puddle able to tell almost exactly what I was paying for in my life.
I know people will say it was a guilty conscience or I wanted to see it...yada yada. But no...I've seen things intertwined with the way reality works to such a deep extent I wouldnt wish the same on anybody, its fucking cruel to see things as clearly as I do almost every single day.
I will admit sometimes karma is waaay too slow, needs to hire a messenger...which brings me to my next point.
Say that when you see me on the news ...and not the owner of this building because they won't be able to have an open casket
I could also argue this with factual experience, although it seems that way and I won't even deny it...its also why most rich douche bags spend the time on their death bed in regret in my opinion trying to make amends
They were just slow on the uptake and couldn't see the adverse affects of their actions, especially when the adverse affects didnt do enough damage for them to even flinch.
But when all the money and power can't save them...they crumble, and then in that moment.

Another reason I hold my principals above all else, even death...he taught me by words to be the way I am...but when shit hit the fan he crumbled under pressure and left me without a word to save his own ass. It was then I decided i'd never have kids...and i'd never fold on my beliefs even it was the last thing I did in life...and it may be.
