You don't need to disconnect the internal battery for a simple HDD or memory swap, thats only if your going near the motherboard by removing the screen and top cover...believe me when I say you DO NOT want to attempt this unless you ABSOLUTELY need too, your more likely to do damage attempting that than prevent it.

Let me get a good look at things before you try anything. If you mean the battery that "pops" out in the back...yes, thats what I meant. Some convertibles have a plug on the battery (small thin laptops, also a good idea)...if your talking about the CMOS chip or another internal battery its entirely not needed. Idk what your laptop even looks like yet, gotta get ready for company dropping in, so i'll dig into it all in a little while.

If you have no good options or a way to backup your data, don't touch anything yet...it may get worse every time you boot up if its the drive so don't do it unless you have a good reason.

RAM will default to the slowest stick.
What do you need 20Gb for? Virtual Machine? Rendering? Only the first 8gb will be Dual Channel, Rest will still be Single Channel.
There are many types of M2: mSATA, NVME with different lengths, single sided, double sided, with heatsinks etc.

Extremely rare. The motherboard with 4 RAM slots that you usually see is still only Dual Channel. Predominantly either in (1+3)(2+4) or (1+2)(3+4) config.

There are but there are drawbacks (stability for starters) so they generally don't do it anymore, if they did it would probably be in a shit laptop

Overclocking Mobo's usually only have 2 slots for this reason...Kingpin (EVGA) for example...it has a lower maximum memory because it can get the best results from that amount at top speeds.

I've never come across a laptop with half board memory and half removable, its usually one or the other (cheap tiny onboard or good solid removable for a good laptop), which says he has a half-decent laptop with some thought put into it...if the board memory dies you could upgrade to 16 was likely the thought behind that, since they figure you would replace the system before upgrading.

Ofc thats never how it works, they assume everyone is rich like them.
